Death March Winter Seasonal Extreme Urban Drinking Hike: The Brewtour

[When] Saturday, March 1, 2014

[Description] NOTE at bottom for those who like beer and socializing but don’t want to hike!!

The most final of details won’t be released until I have time to flesh them out, but here are the general principles:
– 6 highly rated breweries in Orange County
– 16 miles round trip
– finish at a nice restaurant for a sober-up post-march banquet

The idea is to walk a 16 mile loop, stopping at each brewery for a few tasters or a pint (whatever floats your boat). We will start and stop at the brewery I choose that is nearest a quality eatery so when we are done, we will have somewhere to relax, sober up if necessary, and get some grub before calling it a day.

Included breweries:
– Bootleggers
– Anaheim
– Noble
– Old Orange
– Valiant
– Bruery

As spoken by our fearless leader, “let no man cast asunder what has been written this day!”

The only word of warning is that I don’t know a damn thing about public trans in OC, so I can’t give you any good drop-out spots; if you plan to do the hike, you are committing to the whole thing or else you’ll have to provide your own transportation somehow. Bring a cell phone!

Also note, this will be a slightly faster paced walk – not speedwalking by any means, but no loitering or lollygagging; we have to finish before the breweries close up shop!

For those who can’t or don’t want to do the hike part, you are encouraged to meet us at one or more locations along the hike, or just walk to the first one and back with us, or whatever you want. I will be Tweeting and Facebooking our location as we go, so you will have an idea of when we will be at each spot.

St. Patty’s Winter “Hike” – Bring Your Drinking Socks

[When]
Sunday, March 17, 2013 @ 10:00am

[Where]
McG’s Irish Pub & Grill
21356 Devonshire St, Chatsworth, California 91311

Saint Patty’s Day is associated with light to moderate intake of alcoholic beverages, and the Death March is associated with a leisurely stroll through a pleasant natural preserve.

Hah!

This year, on St Patty’s Day, the Death March’s Seasonal Winter Hike will occur. We will go on a “hike,” we will drink before, during and after if you wanna (don’t feel obligated)!

Location is probably start / end at McG’s Irish Pub in Chatsworth near the Chatsworth Metro Station. Awesomeness aspection factorials have been predetermined at roughly 100% off-the-scale super-good!

Start / end point are very Metro accessible, but they’re on the farthest outskirts of the Orange Line in Chatsworth.

“Hike” (long suburban walk) will probably start at an Irish Pub for a morning drink (or however many), go to another pub for another drink (or however many), then end back at the first pub for more drinks (or however many). You should be home in time for evening plans not to be an excuse to miss this! Hah!

“Theme” will be “wear something green I guess and make sure you’re drinking.”

Also be aware it’s Mike Kane’s birthday on St Patty’s Day, so I expect him to have an “appropriate” amount of drinks!

:::FOR RIDE CORPS/DRIVER INFORMATION:::

It’s that time of year again, or for the first time for some of you: the Annual Death March to the Sea!!

This 13-mile hike is NOT for the faint of heart! You need to be in reasonably good shape to complete it. There is a fair amount of elevation gain, and it is brutally placed towards the end of the route. Bring water, and lots of it. Bring snacks. Dress light and wear sunscreen. Be prepared, or the Death March will Punish you like you have not likely been Punished before.

That said, the primary (albeit unspoken) mission statement of the Death March to the Sea is to have fun and foster camaraderie between your friends and family in Death and Marching. It is only a secondary and very optional goal to push yourself to the limits of exertion and challenge yourself to endure Labours and Punishments of ridiculous (mostly harmless) nature.

No one will be turned away, but you are on your own if you jump in and can’t swim. It is your responsibility to determine if you have what it takes to complete the Death March. This is an event for grown-ups, so you will need to take care of yourself like one. Read on for details.

The Theme
–★☆★–

Last year’s Winning Team was Team USA, Captained by Steven Kitzes and featuring the talents of Earl Gertwagen, Nathan “Chopz” Bailey, and George Matthews. As the Winning Team, Team USA has been given the privilege of deciding on the theme for this year’s Death March.

This year’s theme: Post Apocalypse.

The theme is a means to provide participants with an opportunity to exercise and celebrate their creativity by dressing up, carrying props, and embracing an aesthetic or culture. This year, we will be emulating such iconic post-apocalyptic envisionings as The Road Warrior / Mad Max, Fallout, Fist of the North Star, Waterworld, and the like. References to any given zombie apocalypse are not intended, but are nevertheless welcomed.

Which team will win this year?! Who will decide on next year’s theme?!

This is a One-Way Trip
====–★☆★–====

We meet in the San Fernando Valley and hike to the Pacific Palisades. You will need a ride back to the start point and the ensuing (free and conveniently located!) Banquet at the conclusion of the hike.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have arranged with other participants to get a ride back. We typically leave a few cars in Malibu in the morning so that we have a way to get home. Make sure that you have a space reserved in one of those cars.

Leaving your own car in Malibu in the morning is the best option, and comes with the benefits of an honorable Title as part of the Death March Ride Corps. You can also arrange with friends to get a carpool system going as per the Death March Team System. There is no “car” in “team” but you will still need one to get home.

Consult a Death March Officer or Marshal (or leave a comment below) for details and help with getting a ride set up if you need one. We are happy to help… if you were invited to this event, we want you there!!

IMPORTANT
–★☆★–

If you are not signed up under one of our Team Captains by the morning of the hike, you will need to have other arrangements to get home!! You can hike with us, but we reserve the right to leave you at the beach when we all drive home if you haven’t taken care of this very important detail.

Death March Ride Corps 2011

THIS IS ACTUALLY IMPORTANT.

This year’s Death March is already shaping up to be the biggest one ever, and by a big margin. That is very, very, very good. However, that means we will also need to have the biggest Ride Corps ever, and by a big margin.

WE NEED DRIVERS!! RSVP to this event as Attending if you can drive.

PLEASE DO NOT sign up for the Ride Corps unless you ABSOLUTELY can commit to doing this, and you can definitely be there on time!!

Note: If you drive, you get EXTRA RANK POINTS!! Driving as part of the Ride Corps is the ONLY way to earn extra rank points.

 HOW IT WORKS
===– DMttS –===

To drive as a Team Captain:
Select your team, made up of people who are attending the Death March. These people, your team, are the people to whom you will give a ride home at the end of the Death March. Meet at Starbucks at 7 in the morning, drive your car to the end point of the hike, then a Ranger will give you a ride back to the start, so you and your team can hike with the Death March to your car… then you just drive back so everyone can get their cars from the start point and head to the banquet! You get an extra rank point as the driver, and if your team is the first full team to complete the March, you as Captain get to create the following year’s Death March Theme!!

To drive as a Ranger:
Show up at Starbucks with the Team Captains and drive with them to the car drop-off point at the end point of the hike. Then, drive the Team Captains back to the start point so they (and you) can participate in the Death March! You get an extra rank point! You still need to make sure that you are a member of a Team so that you can get a ride home at the end of the hike.

WEST SIDERS:
If you live closer to the end point, you can skip Starbucks and meet us there at 8am. The end point is on Los Liones Drive, just west of Sunset Blvd.

SPECIAL SITUATIONS

If you know someone who can’t come on the hike but may be able to help as an Honorary Ranger in the morning or at the end of the hike, PLEASE invite them to this event. We really need all the help we can get right now… we are very short on committed drivers so far.

THANK YOU RIDE CORPS!! You save us from having to do a second Death March Home in the evening. ;]
